(g) LIGHT; opaque obstructions (renga series) (12.10)

“There are two kinds of light – the glow that illumines, and the glare that obscures.”
James Grover Thurber

LIGHT; opaque obstructions
(renga series)

light white flakes falling
so fine that the faint breeze will
delay their landing

there will be no rainbows from
crystals hanging in windows

no need for a ‘French
Toast’ store run… bread, milk and eggs;
where’s the snow shovel?

~
progress of the day
snowflakes grow larger, less wind
carpet of white grows

deliveries are still made
on the dark ribbon roadways

birds cluster feeder –
refilled when the shovels were
taken from the shed

~
tapered to nothing
the snow, yet temps fell faster
frosting the walkways

not must to push, sweep, shovel
that ice reflecting light rays

even in the morn –
bundled to get the paper;
as the sun poked sky

Note: I thought the quote fitting for a snow storm; light blocking light.
And this series was written over the length of the beginning, middle
and end of the first snowfall of significance this December.
Morning temp at 7:30 am 22 F or -5.5 C

This verse also fits this challenge: first snow

Spring Greys
(mini haibun)

Oh where be the Green O’spring
(Just three days from the starting line)?
The flock of red breasted robins have returned
Looking for safe purchase in the hedge
Their internal clocks say it’s time to build nests!
Both bush and tree seems to remain barren –
If there were buds, they’ve been squirreled away!
They play King of the Hill on ‘white’ mounds of snow!
Even the Red Wing blackbirds have gathered in groups

Yellow dawning sun
Rises in the crisp blue sky;
colorless cold chills

(I may or may not add more. Storm “Stella” has arrived!
I’ve been out four about 45 minutes ‘digging’ at around 6:15 am –
it started snowing around 9 pm last night. The snow is about 6” – 8”…in spots.
Surprisingly the street plow has been through – both sides of the road – once already.)

(Of course the accumulation depends on where you are;
But even 6” – 8”s will cause enough grief on the roads –
And it still is very bitter cold. Just 18 F at 8 am)

Most all of

has melted…

linger in shaded areas

spring; yard work is now on hold
