Mr. Trebek , “What collects at the bottom of toasters?”
(OctaTimbre in syllable count)

They multiply like coat hangers,
Mold on leftovers in the frig,
Or dust bunnies under the bed.
Sometimes though they are just little
Trails that the birds end up eating
So you can’t find your way out of
An enchanted forest or a
Foggy bit of information
That you need – it is right at the
Tip of your tongue; that is ‘fine crumbs’.

autumn sheds
its
leaves on water
~
Yellow willow, aureate chestnut

Citrine ash, amber maple
Ruby fire from burning bushes

All end up in the little creek
That flows behind my home
Clearly stating the change of season
~
the different air
hemispheric chill arrives;
dreams shift their focus

to memories of warmth once
found on sandy island coasts

Exclamation: Winter!
(mini haibun)

Like hail, though not as dense
(If there was any sense to the weather)
Packed flakes fell while the sun shone
(squalls, mini balls of snow flown about, no tether)

Bouncing off the back porch roof
Twirling in unscripted ballet
One huge spotlight slowly shifted in the
Semi-blue sky with dust colored curtain clouds

odd phenomenon
less than half a dozen times
brief distraction points

It’s a ball.

Note: A snowsquall (or snow squall) is a sudden
moderately heavy snowfall with blowing snow and
strong, gusty surface winds. It is often referred to
as a whiteout and is similar to a blizzard but is
localized in time or in location and snow accumulations
may or may not be significant.

Murder in the Morning?
(a mini haibun)

Was he awake
before dawn?
Did he miss the
spiraling of blackbirds –
(when I went to get the
morning paper – dreading
to read the headlines…)
Wings like folding chairs
setting up for or
being taken down after
a funeral in the winter sky…

yesterday was all
rain, the creek rose, the sky dull;
time marched like blind men

(pi ku, tau ku, haiku, free verse)

a halo
round
a winter moon

seen at three; then ringing
the phone
wakes us, ending sleep and dreaming

rolling over at
the disturbance, she sighs he
works, to solve problems

(After a kiss good-bye at
his regular hour of leaving
she wonders dreamily if
he can come home early.)
