            • I’ve got family both compensated and volunteer firefighters… over 100 years between 6 people. Mostly volunteer. Just about two years ago our youngest became a paid firefighter (now for two states).
              Stay safe.
Our home fireplace is behind class doors. It isn’t the primary source of heat.

              • That’s an impressive amount of years over one profession.

I went for a job as a retained fireman a lot of years ago, but I had to get to the station in under five minutes, and even at full sprint, I couldn’t do it. A retained fireman is a volunteer.

One tries to get to the station on time to get on the trucks/ apparatus – for a call. But we actually live the furthest away. At least though travel is by car and not foot. Hubby just went on a Hazmat (hazardous materials) call this morning at around 4 am. A tanker trunk jack-knifed on a local road.

    • It isn’t entirely open…we have outside combustion and glass doors. But the wood sits on a hollow metal tubes and the fan takes the room air in and then goes through the tubes, is warmed up and blown back out. Just a tad better energy efficient wise than an open fire place which draws air from the all over and makes the rest of the house cold…all except that room where the fire is. Often an open fire only warms the heart (sigh)…not really the body or the room.
