in the willow he sat
in winter, no hat; about
an hour there – hawk

looking for fish in the creek
or waiting for squirrels to stir

at the backyard’s end
like a small grey oval there –
big as a small dog

    • The hawk looked small at that distance about one hundred pace to the end of my yard. But even as a young bird it is big.
I only saw him in my yard for about three days. But there are several hawk that patrol the skies of my neighborhood.

  1. The grey squirrel is not one we have around here but there is a cute preschooler song about them. We used to sing it when I taught that age level, Jules!
