Prose surrounds an Elfje

quiet home; battery wall clock ticks, electricity makes
the computer hum, ice in the freezer, and heated air flow…
fingers tappity tap-tap somewhere a siren wails
just before my time to curl up into a single human sleeping…
because the empty nest (still full of fledgeling feathers and
the toys of the newest generation that visits often, but is
now safe with their own parents) is shy one partner…

laughter
yours, his,
theirs – echoes joyfully
as I my eyes
close

waking at seven the still full but slightly waning Wolf Moon
looks like an actor taking a peek out of the stage right curtains –
so dense is the morning fog that I almost can’t see to the end
of the yard – and so warm that the false late January spring has
enticed the birds to practice their joyful chirping to wake worms
for their breakfast – warm enough to get the paper without a coat,
and feel the gentle air as if it were the most refreshing shower…

Mindful 28: Just Waxing…

Five Moon Elfje
Just Waxing…

old
mother’s one
blind pearl eye
looked towards me, gifting
blessings

owl, wolf
angelic observer watches

who?

look!
she says;
almost full moon
stares at you, be

found it in the

The Elfje and the Explanation:

hungry
wolf moon
across the night
sky; ate all the
clouds

in many traditions the full moon is given names
we are familiar with the Harvest moon of autumn
and perhaps the odd proclamation of the second
full moon of a month labeled as a “Blue Moon”
I was reminded of this January full moon’s name
from a new friend, so last night thinking that I
would not get to see this animal named moon –
I was indeed pleasantly surprised to clearly see
in the star dappled velvet sky the full smile of
‘The Man in The Moon”…almost every time I looked
was out in the night, first rising was glowing pink
in the east, again at around nine in the evening,
and then also with less stars but perhaps because
‘the beasts appetite was being sated at two and three
in the starless, but still brilliant morning hours…

So with many thanks, I wrote the Elfje first this time inspired by:
“My Farmer’s Almanac calls the full moon this Jan. 26th, a “Full Wolf Moon” and interestingly claims it “eats up all the clouds.” from

verse and Elfje pairing

perhaps just to get closer to the bird feeder
the cardinal pair travel swiftly from the north
pine to the south, to be closer to the feeder,
though I don’t see them there… they just
rush back to north pine to their nest which is I
am guessing about a third down from the top.

the snow falls and the grey of what was this first
January snow day ends in a darker after dusk…

A verse, transformed into an Elfje…

a quiet night
when nature calls…
to see the moon enveloped
in a glowing silver sack
snagged by branches
of the back tree at four
in the morning –
two hours before your alarm
that is part of your fancy phone
that wasn’t heard
because
you left it in your car…

~~~
quiet
silver glow
cloud captured moon
gently held, eased slowly
down
